CAS numbers in cosmetics: how they support raw-material and formulation data

CAS Registry Numbers are widely used to reference chemical substances. In cosmetic R&D they are useful identity attributes, but they are not a complete description of a cosmetic raw material. Mixtures, natural materials, commercial products and supplier specifications require a broader data model.

In short: what is a CAS number?

A CAS Registry Number is a numeric identifier for a chemical substance or defined chemical entity in the CAS registry. In cosmetics data it can support identity, but should be considered together with INCI, chemical name, EC reference, supplier and specification.

Key takeaways

  • Do not use CAS as the only raw-material key
  • Separate INCI, chemical identity and commercial material
  • Store multiple identifiers and their sources
  • Account for supplier-specific differences
  • Tie regulatory assessments to the actual substance/material record

CAS and INCI serve different purposes

INCI is designed for cosmetic ingredient naming, while CAS numbers reference chemical identity. Their relationships can be complex, so a database should maintain several identifiers with source information.

Commercial materials are more than chemical identity

Supplier materials also carry purity, carriers, preservatives, specification, origin, documentation and commercial data. These remain important even when a CAS number exists.

CAS in regulatory workflows

CAS or EC numbers can support regulatory research, safety documentation and certain CPNP substance data. The key is correct assignment to the substance or material actually used.

Avoiding duplicates

Without governance, several material records may represent the same substance or commercial grade. Supplier, product code, INCI, CAS/EC and specification combinations can support duplicate detection.
