INCI database for cosmetics: structure raw-material data for R&D

An INCI database for cosmetic R&D should do more than look up names. Product developers need INCI names, raw materials, suppliers, internal specifications, documents, cost data and regulatory information connected in a consistent data foundation.

In short: what is an INCI and raw-material database?

An INCI and raw-material database structures cosmetic ingredients and the commercial raw materials actually used by a company. It connects standardized INCI names with internal raw-material records, supplier information, documents and use in specific formulations.

Key takeaways

  • Separate INCI names from commercial raw materials
  • Store CAS and other identifiers structurally
  • Connect suppliers, specifications and documents per material
  • Link raw materials directly to formulations and versions
  • Maintain changes centrally instead of across spreadsheets

INCI is not the same as a commercial raw material

This distinction matters in development. An INCI name identifies a cosmetic ingredient or labeling-relevant name, while a purchased commercial raw material may contain multiple components and supplier-specific specifications. A reliable data model should represent these levels separately and connect them.

Which raw-material data R&D actually needs

Beyond INCI names, teams commonly need internal material numbers, suppliers, specifications, safety and quality documents, prices, minimum quantities, use levels, function categories and regulatory notes. If this information only lives in distributed attachments, its relationship to formulations and development projects is lost.

CosIng is an important information source, not a standalone legal assessment

The European Commission provides CosIng as an information database on cosmetic substances and ingredients. The Commission explicitly notes that CosIng has no legal value by itself and that the Cosmetics Regulation and its annexes determine whether and under which conditions substances may be used. Internal systems should therefore distinguish external reference information from the company’s own regulatory assessment.

Why formulation linkage creates the operational value

The value grows when raw-material records are not isolated. If a material is updated, replaced or reassessed, teams should be able to understand where it is used across formulas and projects. That turns a lookup table into an R&D data foundation.
